Constructing An Indoor Zen Garden - A How To And Why You Should

Zen
Living in the present, as in right now, is the meaning brought about by the word Zen which also teaches us to enjoy and revel in the beauty of nature and all it wonderful gifts. While the Zen beliefs have first been taught throughout the Buddhist religion it is also used world wide. It is also practiced with several different names like Seon in Korea, Chan in China and Thien in Viet Nam but of course it all boils down to Buddhism. An indoor Zen garden is tranquil, inspirational and a joy to view by people that enjoy gardening , but of course it can be for those who just wish to admire it too. Here are some ways to enjoy a Zen garden and experience the relaxation for your body and your spirit.

Uniting Nature Through The Elements

To create Zen we need to bring together all the elements from nature which are presumable flowing water, pebbles and or rocks along with a dry landscape. It is ideal to place your indoor Zen garden in an area suited to it’s size where you tend to relax the most in your home. You will want to pay attention to your indoor Zen garden and be able to reconstruct it everyday as soon as you first create it. Decide on the shape, the plants and the rocks; bonsais or bamboo are both excellent plants for this project due to fact that they fit well into any design you can come up with.

A Little Assistance

Having a little trouble getting started adding and altering and you just want an indoor Zen garden already started to get you going? Well, good news, there are indoor Zen garden kits you can buy that consist of all the essential items required to be set up in a very short time. There are many other ways to come up with ideas such as searching for Zen garden on the internet, looking for photographs of already made gardens that you can fashion after for your own use. You may also visit book stores for further info and drawings that will entice you to be creative.

A Garden Brings You Much More Than Just A Few Plants

Having an indoor Zen garden brings you so much more than you think. It will assist you in relaxing, removing some or all of your stress and most importantly tranquility to your environment. Trickling water brings this effect into reality and is accomplished with such a simple creation. Place a Zen garden where you will get the most relaxation such as the bedroom where you will begin to know what a good nights sleep really is like or you could also use the living area where you could just meditate while enjoying the trickling water sounds.

The Best Personal Development Goal is Goal Achievement

personal development
development has the main aim of helping you to reach your goals! This is its main purpose. To discover personal development for yourself and experience it in a real-life way you need to know the major factors to successful goal setting that lead to goal-getting.

Here I have given six essential personal development steps that, if followed, will help you to always reach your goals.

Keep in mind that there are over six billion inhabitants of the earth currently and just as many have lived in the past. You can take heart in the fact that somewhere at sometime, someone has achieved what you are trying to achieve now!

Although there are many personal development methods available for goal achievement some are better than others. It is important to be clear on what it is you want before you decide which the best way to get it.

Here are your personal development tips to help.

Step 1. Get clarity:

Know what you want. You must have a clear vision of what it will be like once you have achieved your goal. You must be able to evoke the feelings associated with having already achieved it. This is a true personal development power trick and the lack of this step is the reason why the majority of people fail time and time again! The “whys” behind having your goal are vital. Why do you want it? Why would it improve your life? Why should you have it? Answer these personal development questions and you will have won three quarters of the battle!

Step 2. Research, research, research:

Do some personal development research. Study your chosen goal. Know everything you can about. Seek out the stories of those who have what you want and learn how they got it! Carefully study the path taken by everyone who started in a similar situation to you but overcame all odds to achieve the goal that you now want to achieve. Their stories can be found if you choose to look for them! ! Look at how they did it then formulate a similar personal development plan!

Step 3. Smooth out the path:

Once you have successfully performed your personal development research you should have learned about your goal. By studying the lives of those who have already achieved it you will find that in the majority of cases these people encountered many problems - the bigger the goal, the bigger the problems in most cases. Learn from their personal development trials and tribulations. Anticipate how you may encounter problems and how you will deal with them. Or, better still, move in a direction that minimizes the “need” for problems in the first place.

Step 4. Formulate your plan:

Create a solid personal development plan that will bring you your goal. Set smaller objectives and break them down into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily stepping-stone goals. Once each one of these personal development objectives has been completed it should have brought you a little or a lot closer to your goal. This is real personal development!

Step 5. Keep it real:

Be realistic about your expectations in each personal development step - do not bite off more than you can chew! When creating your smaller objectives ensure you are realistic about their scale and time limits. Small steps taken everyday are much better than giant strides every month!

Step 6. Motivation:

Use personal development techniques to keep yourself motivated. Form a visual image of yourself already in possession of your goal and mentally rehearsh your success everyday. Evoke the strong positive emotion that you identified in step 1 and really feel it as you visualize. This is one of the most powerful personal development tricks you can use and should not be underestimated!

You now have six powerful personal steps to use. Takes these steps and you’ll experience success. All the best in your personal development plans!

The Path of Personal Development

personal development
Human beings, the highest and mightiest of all creations on earth are endowed with qualities and potentials to grow to large heights. It is said that even Albert Einstein, the eminent scientist had used only a fraction of his brain. If that is the case of a scientist who toiled day and night, then what’s to say about the ordinary mortals like you and me. Each and everyone of us should look inwards to see how much energy we waste indulging in things of no use to ourselves and society at large.

Personal development is all about growing up, having the maturity to own up responsibility of ones life, career, emotions, relationships and finances. It involves a conscious effort to reach the goals of your life and balancing your inner conflicts. Personal development requires hard work and there is no easy way out. Beware of shortcuts because they will usually take you nowhere. The developed person or for that matter the person who is matured remains unruffled even at the challenges life throws at him in life.

The inner strength will see him tide over the crises smoothly. He will have the courage to face life and its unpredictability in a bold manner. Many resources are now available to give you practical ideas to mature mentally and to make decisions both small and big. They teach you to take life as it comes without becoming over-anxious or stressful. You are the captain of your life and steer your wheel to a safe shore of your liking. You should understand that it is you who makes your destiny. Learn to know thyself and avoid self denial and self imposed limits.

You should know your positives and negatives, your abilities and your weaknesses. To create the life of your choice, get motivated and disciplined. To reach the goals of your life you should have or need to develop the inner urge to scale the heights. Without motivation, you will get nowhere. Call upon your inner strength and face life positively. When you set out for something you are sure to encounter obstacles. To face these hindrances you need guts to move ahead.

Sometimes the obstacles come in the form of damaging remarks that can throw you haywire. You have to believe in yourself to overcome this. Develop a routine that is easy to follow. This will help you stay on track without much effort. When you choose a career, choose one where your passion lies. Only the work you adore can yield good results. If you are doing a job where your mind is not there, it will lack luster. Let your financial independence come from honest work without compromising integrity.

Enter into relationships that allow you to grow. Some relations are damaging in the sense that both are doomed. Always think of the rich life you have and make use of it prudently for some opportunities come only once. Those who lead a successful life are people who courageously explore, express creatively and embrace human life for the common good of humanity. They live a wholesome life, true to its core.

Making a Habit of Personal Development

Making a Habit of Personal Development

By Justin Popovic

It can be a rather amusing task to sit back and analyze some of the daily rituals we perform, often without giving any conscious thought. I believe this is a good thing because we would accomplish very little if we had to stop and think about every task we perform.

Just today, I was making the short drive from my home to the library where I do most of my writing, when I noticed I had been completely engrossed in thoughts about the book I am writing. I had to look in the back seat to check if I even brought my laptop and writing materials. I then became aware of all of the other things that had to take place just to make this short trip. Among other things, I had to put on my shoes, put on my jacket, walk from the house to the car, unlock the car with the keyless entry, place my bag in the back seat, sit in the driver’s seat, fasten my seatbelt, start the car, and so on.  The entire time this was happening, my thoughts were directed towards my task for the day.

This got me thinking about some of the other habit patterns in our life that we consciously decide to do without really asking ourselves if the task is really the most important thing on our list. For example, many people choose to watch a number of hours of television each day. I personally know people who spend an unusual amount of time daily cleaning their home or randomly browsing the internet. The point I am trying to make is that most of us can probably uncover at least one hour of time each day that we give to meaningless tasks.

The interesting thing is, if you ask most people if they are happy with all of the results in their life, the truthful answer is often no.

My goal is to encourage people to dedicate some time every single day to personal reflection and self development. If you are unhappy with a certain situation, you have the ability to change your thinking, and ultimately your behaviour, so that you can improve that particular circumstance. Instead of watching a daytime drama or indulging in excessive dusting and mopping, you might want to consider picking up a book or audio program that forces you to examine your results.

From my personal experience, this simple action produces an internal reaction. Because you are examining your own personal results, you quickly realize that you are the only one who can change them. Unfortunately, in our society today, people are fixated on producing immediate results and having tangible evidence in their hands the minute they ask for something. With personal development, the true benefits can only be realized when we incorporate the ideas into a habit.

Think about it this way. If you were to make a firm commitment to read or listen to personal development educational programs for even 30 minutes a day for the next two weeks, what kind of positive impact could this have on your life? What if you did it for two months? Similar to unconscious activities such as getting dressed or brushing your teeth, you would start to create a new habit and become the kind of person who automatically takes action on ideas that move you in the direction of improved results.

From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that this kind of self study works. It really is a never ending process because it is part of our nature to grow, expand and develop and ultimately, it provides an excellent opportunity to make positive life changes. As you become more involved in personal development, you will start to notice areas of your life that are working well and other areas that require improvement. This kind of education will help you harness ideas that will improve your results while at the same time, overcome all of the inhibitors standing in the way of you achieving your aim!

A common question I hear is, “Where do I start?” There are so many good authors, philosophies and ideas on this topic that you can never really say which style will work. The best advice I have ever received from this perspective is to study and learn from those who are producing results that you would like in your life. It’s a pretty basic lesson but a very important one. Seek out the people who have already achieved what you would like to achieve and learn from them. Success often leaves clues and it is up to you to find those clues and act on them. With a daily commitment to personal improvement, you will quickly become a master detective you will transform each clue into a tangible action that will lead to a more fulfilled life.

The Personal Development Key That Brings Success

personal development
Embarking on a personal development or self improvement program can be exciting and rewarding. However, many people try many different personal growth methods in an attempt to improve their life and although they gain much from their efforts they fail to reach their life goals. Self improvement and personal development can create disillusioned seekers or self improvement junkies (seeking that one program that will do it all) because they fail to deliver fully on their promises.

Have you recieved the results that you were promised from the personal development tool syou used.? Did you get the full benefit of the self improvement programs you diligently followed? If not take heart for I am going to share with you the reasons why and the solutions!

The great majority of personal development programs, CDs, techniques, books and seminars teach very valuable and life changing information. The methods they promote do work. It is unfortunate though that they are missing a very vital and essential truth. It is this missing information that is the key to achieving unparalleled success with these programs. This key is not only the launching pad for success and a guaranteed method which will allow you to gain anything you desire if it is put into practise but it is also the reason behind your failure because you have not known nor applied it before now!

Have you ever noticed that there are certain things in your life that seem to be on auto-repeat? You keep getting jobs that are unsatisfactory; have bad bosses; irritating co-workers; financial problems; painful relationships, etc?

Have you tried hard to change certain situations in your life just to have the same outcome every time no matter what actions you take?

The reason behind this phenomenon lies in your mind.

Anyone who has studied self improvement or personal development and even those of you who have merely touched on the subject will know that everything begins in the mind. Without the right mental attitude you can achieve nothing worthwhile in life. Nothing of major importance has ever been achieved without the achiever having had a clear mental image of the outcome already in mind before success ever came. This is where many people go wrong. They think that if they create a positive mental picture of what they want and then take actions to get it, everything will fall into place easily - they are missing the key!

The only reason people fail to achieve their goals is because of negative mental beliefs. Most times these beliefs are hidden deep in the subconscious mind. In order to achieve the success you desire it is necessary to evaluate your belief system; resurface these beliefs and then eliminate them!

By holding a strong image in your mind of what you want and backing that image with clear and purposeful action you begin to set in motion some very powerful universal forces that work to aid you in making that mental image solid in the real world. However, many times these mental images are hindered by the negative beliefs that you hold which are contrary to what you actually want. These beliefs are always active and running like computer programs in your subconscious mind ‘ sending out the opposite mental images to that of your desire.

It is imperative to your success to find and eliminate these negative programs. This is the whole point of personal development.

There are many great methods for eliminating negative programming. However, I have found that the hardest thing to do is not removing these negative beliefs but finding them in the first place. So this should be your first goal ‘ to seek out your negative programming. Before beginning this bare in mind that it doesn’t matter how you got these beliefs, or who gave them to you. All you want to do is find them and remove them. Leave blame out of it!

Begin by creating a goal. Write it down as though it has already happened. Read this statement aloud and then close your eyes. Create as much positive emotion around this mental picture as you can. Now just enjoy this imaginary scene until you begin to have doubts that it is real. Take a blank piece of paper and on it begin to scribble down all the negative thoughts that enter your head. Don’t judge them, suppress them or get annoyed at them, just let them flow.

Now once you have a list of all the negative thoughts connected to your goal you can begin to remove them.

Look over your list and analyse all the statements you produced. Really think about them. Are they true? Is there any basis for them? Evaluate each one in turn and think of ways to overcome each belief. There are hundreds of great self improvement tools designed to help you do this but here is a simple one to get you started.

Take one negative statement and think about what that means to you. Identify the underlying belief behind that thought. Is it a lack of self-worth, low self-confidence, insecurity, feeling not-good-enough or just a lame belief you picked-up from someone else that you have never given any real thought to?

Challenge the belief. Ask yourself questions every time you recall that belief. Question the authenticity of the belief. Identify the emotion that you feel when you think about that belief. Allow that feeling to fully surface. When you allow this to happen you will find that the negative emotions you are feeling get very strong just before they leave. When you allow the negative emotion, which is driving the negative belief, to fully express itself and dissipate you will find yourself much more positive and without the negative thoughts you had previously.

So everyday speak aloud your goal statement in the morning and visualize it as being reality. Evoke strong positive emotion around this image. Then, at night, repeat this procedure but use a blank piece of paper and write down all the negative thoughts that surface. Then take each one in turn and give it some real thought. Feel the negative emotions related to it and allow them to surface fully ‘ do not try to suppress them. Then allow them to fully express themselves in your mind and body and they will dissipate. This can be hard to do as we have been taught to suppress our emotions and have probably been doing it for many years. When you begin to feel the emotions getting stronger you will have a strong urge to suppress them but don’t! When the negative emotions behind your beliefs are allowed to fully surface and express themselves they naturally dissipate. As they dissipate so do the thoughts and beliefs behind them.

You will find that you become much more positive in a very short time and find it much easier to achieve your goals.

The Best Way to Travel on a Budget

Travel

Well you won’t be traveling to Monaco and staying at a five star resort on a budget, will you? Maybe so!  Mostly, traveling on a budget means finding the cheapest price for the experience you want.

When traveling on a budget it’s best to keep in mind the following points:

1. Travel in the off-peak seasons. You can save up to as much as fifty per cent off air flights and accommodation costs if you plan to travel in low season times.

2. Stay away from popular tourist spots (unless they are on your ‘must-see’ list). If you can go off the beaten track with your destinations, things can be cheaper to see and do and your cultural experiences will be richer.

3. Try camping. Not only is it the cheapest form of accommodation it’s a great way to get up close and personal to nature. It’s the best way to see National Parks and Heritage listed areas.

4. Look for special travel offers (or packages). But make sure you check everything that they include - and don’t include.

5. Invest in a travel pass where you are able. Most developed countries have a rail or bus transport system where you can obtain day, week or monthly passes that will get you around cheaply.

6. Get a work permit if you aim to gain employment while traveling overseas. Working can help subsidize places that aren’t so cheap, such as Europe and Australia.

7. Look for good exchange rates on the dollar. This may help you decide which country to travel to.

8. Think about shortening your visit to destinations that are expensive and increasing your length of stay in cheaper places.

9. Where possible use your credit card. The exchange rate is better.

10. When staying in a hotel, avoid paying for ‘extras’. Don’t touch anything from the honor bar. Don’t watch the in-house movies and don’t use the hotel phone. And try not to use room service too much!

On the world scene there are some great places to travel on a budget for under thirty dollars a day. In Asia you can try India, Laos, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand, Sumatra and Burma. In Central and South America you can visit El Salvador, Bolivia and Ecuador. If you are after a budget experience in the Pacific, try Fiji or New Zealand. Over in Africa there are some great budget destinations such as Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Ghana. Don’t forget the Middle East where places like Iran, Syria and Turkey provide excellent value for money and wonderful experiences for the budget traveler.

There is no ‘best place’ to travel on a budget. Just be prepared to look around, avoid the pitfalls of unwanted costs in package deals or hotel bookings. If you want to travel and your budget doesn’t meet your expectations, be flexible and see if there is somewhere cheaper you might like to experience. You could be pleasantly surprised with your stay in India or Iran, when you thought you wanted to go to Tahiti.

Zen and the Art of Slide Design

Zen
Effective communications and slide presentations may seem like mutually exclusive ideas, but slides are an inescapable part of agency and corporate life. It’s great fun to beat up on PowerPoint, and much has been written on how bad so many presentations are. Often people approach this problem by becoming better at PowerPoint, but that’s not the answer.

The antidote comes instead in a new book from one of the masters of presentation design, Garr Reynolds. Garr’s Presentation Zen, published by New Riders, should become an industry bible on the topic of simplifying presentations for better communications. Garr’s blog of the same name is the world’s most popular presentation design blog, and is a great resource for communicators.

When I was at Hewlett-Packard, I hired Garr to present to a group of about 40 executive and internal communications professionals. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Garr inspired the group to fundamentally change the way slides were done in our organization, leading to much more effective and engaging executive presentations.

And that’s really the crux of good slide design. Inspiration. Zen is as much a philosophy as it is a religion, and the same is true for good slide design. Presentation Zen is not a how-to in the traditional sense. Garr is quick to point out that simplistic rules like the “1-7-7 Rule,” which suggests “one main idea per slide… seven lines of text maximum…(and) seven words per line maximum,” still produce awful slides.

Garr once told me that simplicity involved “removal of everything but the essential.” So Presentation Zen is a how-to, but it is about how to adopt a philosophy that will help you simplify to create better communications. Which is HARD.

I usually don’t bother looking at the foreword when I read a book, but Presentation Zen is an exception, featuring some words, and slides, from Guy Kawasaki, and what I think is one of the most important messages of all: “Good slides should enhance a live talk; slides are not meant to tell the whole story without you there.”

Too often the whole story is in the slides, either because of the idea that the slides have to stand alone to become a “leave-behind” (NO, don’t do it!) or because of a weak presenter or a presenter who does not know the material.

Garr writes about another problem, the “slideument.” A slideument is a slide into which is pasted a large amount of information, such as an Excel spreadsheet. These are not slides, but documents in slide form. I worked at one company that overcame admonitions to “limit your presentation to 12 slides” by pasting four miniature slides into each full-sized slide. This is the slide that the presenter always introduces with the caveat, “I’m sorry for the eye chart…” So why would a presenter use a slide he/she already knows is ineffective?

Garr offers all kinds of practical tips throughout the book, like:

You don’t need your logo on every slide

3D graphs detract from the simplified display of information

Empty space on a slide is OK

The book is beautifully illustrated and printed (as a design book ought to be.) You’ll be pleased that there are no instructions for how to better use PowerPoint or Apple’s Keynote. The problem with previous books on presentation is that they are about how to use the tools, not about how to make better slides. In this regard, Presentation Zen is groundbreaking, and I think it belongs on the bookshelf of every PR professional and corporate communicator.
