“Zen Christmas Decor”
Miy Project: “Christmas Tabletop Theme Decor”, An inviting holiday table, Zen Fusion Style.”
My fusion theme is based on a composition of different décor-style influences. It is modern and transitional, yet contemporary at the same time. It includes the simplicity of Zen, combined with elegance and nostalgia. You could say that I spiced things up a little by adding touches of holiday elements such as glitter, snowflakes, stars and Christmas greenery.
With an idea of Oriental spice in mind when I went to choose my table, the whole vision came together as soon as I spotted the perfect table for my composition - an elegant dining room set of a modern transitional style, in a rich black-and-ginger-brandy-coloured combination by Dinec. The table runners are in rich tones of ginger spice, burgundy and auburn with black accents, in assorted textures of organza, cotton and novelty ribbon trim, adorned with tassel ornaments. The centre runner is in an ecru cotton fabric with Oriental cinnamon-coloured symbols. It is trimmed with a black satin border. Here’s a simple trick in order to save on hours of sewing. Just fuse the hems with fusing tape (available at fabric stores), then add a decorative ribbon border or tassels.
I chose an organza fabric as the main table cloth in order to be able to see the richness and beauty of the table displayed through the fabric. To create a festive table setting for eight, I chose a glass aubergine place setting with a wicker texture by Studio Nova.
I used Pébéo Vitrail 160 glass paints on the back all of the dishes. I painted the charger plates with assorted splattered patterns in burgundy, gold, red and black. The dinner dishes were all painted copper. Painting the back allows the texture and pattern to be visible. I then painted the entrée plates in shades of red and burgundy, leaving a square pattern unpainted at the centre in order to see the copper colour of the dinner plate through it. For the finishing touch, I added a fine detailed square design with a copper-coloured liner. I also used glass paint to add a basic copper square on the water glasses.
I wanted a simple contemporary floral arrangement as my centerpiece. White Christmas lilies and spiral copper branches at the centre with river stones and wooden cranberries were placed at the bottom of a clear glass rectangular-shaped base. I added touches of greenery on the gifts and to the cutlery sets and I placed one copper leaf on each plate setting.
Six slender burgundy candles for the table were adorned with copper leafing and placed in square glass candle holders by Misaka, which I ornamented with beaded wires.
I created assorted holiday artworks to embellish the walls for the season -a poinsettia painting made with Textured paste to add dimension and a paper montage frame made with assorted rice papers in various colours. For holiday nostalgia, I made a family photo Advent calendar on a canvas.
I made several customized greetings cards out of recycled cards, gift tags, ornaments, scrap paper, ribbons, beads, copper trim and sequins. Making a tree ornament and placing it on a card is a great way to say happy holidays to loved ones. I revamped an old louvered door panel in a red, gold and copper weathered finish to display the cards.
Even the backs of each of the chairs were trimmed with care. A red satin ribbon, combined with an organza fabric bow, with a tassel ornament and a pine branch at the centre.
I covered two red candle lanterns with a copper mesh cuff and beads. I recycled four black jars, made red and copper letters out of Super Sculpey, a polymer clay, to spell the word Noël, and attached them to the jars with golden raffia. Red decorative jars were embellished with beads and greenery accents. A simple black vase was enhanced with a copper paint square to repeat the pattern on the glasses.
I also transformed plain chopsticks by dressing them up with rice paper and copper wire bands. Again, Super Sculpey was used to make the chopstick and place card holders, which were painted with black acrylic then top coated with a bronze metallic gel.
Each project that I have created for my theme table requires only a few basic craft supplies combined with recycled items, all of which are of basic skills to make.

Zen Steps to Calming Down Easily
It’s easy to calm down quickly. No matter what is happening around us, we never have to become trapped in stress or anxiety. It’s important to learn how to calm down quickly this as negative emotions can easily become addictive. The longer we hold onto them, the harder it can be to let go. Zen offers many pathways to becoming free of negativity. This article is based upon Zen principles and value-centered counseling. It offers enjoyable and effective steps to calming down, feeling good about yourself and finding that peaceful place in the storm.
Open The Treasure House Within
In Zen students are told: “Open the treasure house within.” This is a reminder that we are all are endowed with many resources hidden within. In order to access our innate abilities, we must stop looking everywhere else and forget about depending upon others. Instead, we are told to spend time each day taking responsibility for what’s going on inside. We turn our attention within, discover who we truly are and stop rejecting ourselves and others. As we do this, we are beginning to open the treasure house within.
Pay Attention
We are what we think about. When we stay fixated on one person, thought or situation, it is easy to become caught in the grip of self centered, obsessive thoughts. The more we pay attention to that which is negative or upsetting, the more strength it has to rule our lives. This can be counteracted easily.
Take control of your attention and what you’re focusing upon. Spend time each day developing concentration. This is also called meditation (or zazen). Sit with a straight back, do not move, follow your natural breath. Let random thoughts come and go. Do not suppress them, but do not let them grab your attention away. (At first you may be besieged by many surprising thoughts and feelings, but if you simply notice them and then return your attention to your breathing, these will soon die down). Count your breath from one to ten, then all over again. Do this for at least ten to fifteen minutes without moving. By not moving we are stopping what is called the monkey mind.
Stop The Monkey Mind
The monkey mind is the mind that jumps from one thing to the next, fears, demands, criticizes and sabotages our lives. It is the part of ourselves, which causes sorrow and fear. By taking charge of our focus, by not paying attention to or responding to the many negativities the monkey mind throws our way, we become balanced and calm. As we do this regularly, we are no longer carried away by passing feelings and thoughts. Instead, we discover a peaceful place in the storm to which we can always return for comfort and strength.
Focus on Strengths not Weaknesses
As we focus upon our strengths, not our weaknesses, little by little, fear, anger and depression fade. Rather than struggle with problems, we learn to become available to solutions. This is accomplished by working with focus. The question we always keep before us is: What am I focusing on this moment? Am I dwelling on problems or open to solutions and new ideas? Am I aware of where I am right at this moment, or lost somewhere in a dream? Am I grateful for what I have, or dwelling upon the wrongs I think others have done me?
Life continually renews and confronts us with new tasks, challenges, opportunities and solutions, day after day. Are we in touch with this ever-flowing reality? Are we focusing on the gifts we are always receiving, and ways we can give back to others as well? By choosing to take charge of our focus we dissolve the primary cause of our suffering – a monkey mind that has run wild.
Take Constructive Action
Once we take charge of our focus, we place it upon what we are receiving, what we have to be grateful for. Then it is easy to take the next step and naturally become aware of what others need from us, what we have to offer, how we can give back. Then we do it. We take action. We do not hesitate. We focus upon simple, daily actions, which are constructive for ourselves and others.
We spend some time each day doing “deeds of service”, finding ways we can give to others, make their days easier and happier. As we focus upon giving and encouraging others, a strange thing happens - our personal anxiety vanishes, and we, ourselves, become filled with joy. Before long, we become filled with something even more important than joy - self respect.
A primary source of stress and anxiety is low self esteem; feeling badly about ourselves. The most powerful way to get rid of this is to have a healthy dose of self respect. When we fill our lives with constructive actions, self worth develops naturally. It does not come about through artificially boosting self esteem, but as a result of living a life worthy of respect.
In this manner we grow able to handle any situation life presents us with. When we are able to do that, not only do we calm down easily, but enjoy all aspects of our days. We feel like life is a gift we are receiving; and we become a gift to life as well.

Italian Zen
Walking slowly through the North End can become a journey through the layers of time within an Italian Village. Usually I’m hurrying to a destination with a sense of purpose, but today I had no particular place to go. I decided to walk slowly, raise my level of consciousness and become more aware of my surroundings. Sometimes it takes a solicitous eye to see the truth. In Zen philosophy, intellectual learning is nothing but studying the menu, while actual practice is the eating of the meal.
So perceiving every move to be my next, I began to indulge.
Walking up Salutation Avenue on a hot June day, the sweet aroma of oregano permeated my senses. Have you ever noticed the mixed aroma of garlic, pastry and coffee a block or so before you reach the main restaurant district on Hanover Street?
This has more to do with air circulation than the abundance of restaurants. The buildings block and prevent a steady flow of fresh air from the harbor to the inner streets. Consequently the aromas linger and swirl around your head, consisting mostly of garlic, pastry and coffee.
At the top of Salutation I an impulse to turn left and slowly shuffled south on Hanover Street; when I approached a man in his mid sixties. The bright wrinkles around his eyes reflected many years of good living. He was holding a long leash with a very large dog at the other end. The man was short, about 5’ 4”, the dog was 5’ 6”.
“What a beautiful dog you have here, I proclaimed, please tell me the breed.”
“Oh, this is not my dog; this is my son’s dog. I walk him when I come to visit in the North End. His name is Maxwell, he’s a good dog, gentle, quiet but he’s huge.
My name is Chris Rossetti; I live a couple of blocks from here.
“Piacere, my name is Gino.”
“Gino, did you live here when you were younger?
“Yeah, I was born here, I went to school here and I was a postman here for over 30 years!” His chest swelled with prided as he spoke and his body would pivot from left to right.
“The North End was a much different place when you were a boy, I imagine.”
“Oh, yes; too many changes, too many, but what can you do?”
“Do you remember any stories about the North End from when you were a boy?”
“Did you know there was a floating hospital that docked off the North End beach in the early 1900’s?”
“I didn’t even know there was a North End Beach.” Thinking a beach in the North End today would attract thousands of sun worshipers.
“Well, there was a beautiful beach here and we all swam in it. The boys had their pier and the girls had their own too. Now, this floating hospital offered medical relief and free immunization for the immigrant children.”
“That is amazing, what happened to it?”
“Oh, it caught on fire and burned down; at least that’s the old story I heard when I was a boy.” No one was injured, but I don’t think they built another.”
“Gino it was nice to meet you and Maxwell, and try to stay in the shade.”
“Ciao.” Gino’s eyes were smiling.
My research tells me:
USS Boston Floating Hospital
On July 25, 1894, the Boston Floating Hospital sailed. Each day, mothers and their children received therapy, medical care, and health care education. For 33 years, the hospital and research facilities were located aboard a ship.
In 1927, the hospital ship was destroyed by fire. Fortunately no patients were aboard. In 1931 it became the Tufts New England Medical Center.
I turned right and walked down North Bennett Street until I cam to the Nazzaro Center. I read this was once the local bath house for many residents who did not have showers in their home. I walked through the playground until I saw three men in their mid sixties sitting in lounge chairs taking in the sun and having a quiet discussion. I recognized one of them and reintroduced myself.
“Hello Sam, I met you last week, my name is Chris.”
“Yes, I remember you. You’re a reporter right?”
“No, I said shaking my head and smiling. I conduct a Cultural Heritage Tour in the North End, and you started to tell me about an Italian POW camp that was here in the North End in1943.”
“Well they lived in tents right across North Bennet Street, where they have parking lot now and some stayed in the building that became a High School. On Sunday the soldiers were allowed to eat in the homes of the local residents.”
“Did you know many women fell in love with the soldiers and after the war; they were married and raised families here? The men found jobs or set up a shop of their own. Everyone here made things happen.”
“Thais a wonderful story, thanks Sam, I’ll talk to you later, enjoy the sun.”
As I was walking away he said, “Remember you become what you think about.”
I was surprised and reassured by such a profound statement as I walked down what was once known as “School Alley.”
When I reached Prince Street I stopped and gazed up and down the street. I tried to imagine the change and transition of the people who lived here; and the transient nature of the culture and architecture.
I wondered where else would I hear stories of an Italian POW camp, a floating hospital and “Old World” philosophy all within the hour. This could only happen in the North End.
Sometimes we don’t always see things as they are; we see things as we are. This gave me the chance to see the North End for what it is, not what I think it is.

Zen Meditation Allows A Person To Focus On Truth
There is quite a bit of talk these days in the media about meditation and spiritual enlightenment. Some might even think it is a rather trendy thing to “be into,” yet it is doubtful that it will be one of those passing fads of the pop culture. The fact is that there are numerous methods of meditation, such as Zen meditation, that have been part of other cultures for generations, so it is not likely to be a passing craze, no matter how little Western culture truly understands it.
There are numerous meditation techniques that people who are interested and want to learn to meditate can choose from. While all forms of mediation have some commonalities, the techniques do differ based on what part of the world and what culture the particular practice is rooted in. Zen meditation has developed out of Zen Buddhism. It is also known as Zazen and incorporates various seated positions, special breathing techniques and chakras.
The discipline of Zen meditation is essentially focused on enabling the practitioner to live their daily lives in complete awareness of themselves and their surroundings. Through the practice of this meditation approach, people can escape from the “auto-pilot” existence that is so prevalent and which robs people of experiencing their lives fully.
When people fall into the trap of operating primarily on automatic pilot, they rarely notice all of the things that are happening around them; even within their own minds and hearts. This certainly can interfere with a person’s ability to be enlivened spiritually or to be on the path to spiritual development. Zen meditation can help to break the cycle of automatic living and help a person to engage more fully in their own life.
Through Zen meditations, people experience each moment of a day directly and with awareness and responsiveness. They consciously practice being aware of everything that they encounter and try to enliven their senses by paying attention to everything that they might hear, see, smell, feel and taste.
Another way of expressing this concept is by attempting to be completely and fully aware, while engaged in any activity, at any particular moment. Some people also call this, “living in the moment” or “living consciously.” The idea is to “become at one” with whatever they are currently engaged in doing.
Some examples of this would be: when eating, the practitioner is totally focused on the meal and their actions involved in eating; when they are engaged in a Zen mediation session, they stay concentrated on the reality of that moment and they do not allow their thoughts, their feelings, or their sensations to preoccupy or distract them; when they are engaged in work, they only work; when doing routine tasks such as brushing their teeth, they focus on that task and do not let their minds wander to think about other things.
While the Zen practitioner does not have to be engaged in meditation all day, every day, regular meditation practice helps to calm, center and focus the mind so that the person is able to focus and retain keen awareness. The Zen practice recognizes that all thoughts are a natural and beneficial function of the human mind and that thought should not be ignored, rejected or stopped. Instead, the practice allows wandering thoughts to be acknowledged then set to the side, keeping the mind from being carried away by anxieties, worries, fears and other discursive notions.
This method of meditation practice allows the person to enjoy a sense of liberation from the “pollution” of negative thoughts that can often cloud the mind and confuse thinking. Zen meditation helps to alleviate unnecessary suffering of the mind and allows the person to focus on truth, clarity and spiritual enlightenment.

Creative Zen Vision W Review - Video Formats
One of the main concerns portable video player enthusiasts lies in the fact that not every good looking player will in fact support the video formats they use the most. For instance some people love the AVI container, other simply like WMV better and others just use a specific format because their favorite media is encoded using such codec.
For many of us, buying an expensive MP3-video player which doesn’t play the desired format is a total pain and things get even worse when we have to use brute PC power to re-encode the media we want to watch on our players, this is why it is very important that the player we are buying supports the container we use the most.
It would be safe to say that AVI is one of the most popular video containers used to share video files on the internet, this container can be H.264, DivX or Xvid compressed these are all video codecs which may be used to produce videos. Another popular format is the MPG container which is one of the older formats around, they may be found in MPG-1 and MPG-2 for DVDs; yet another container which is mostly used by Japanese fan-sub animation fans is the MKV container which can have several audio and subtitle streams all in one file.
The formats supported by the Zen vision W are: MPG1, AVI (Divx, Xvid) and WMV at a maximum resolution of 720X640 which is really good for a portable player which can be connected to a TV in order to watch the movie at full resolution on a bigger screen. At 30GB the amount of movies which can be stored using any of the codecs mentioned can be of up to 42 - 700MB movies, this number may vary according to the bit-rate used to encode each video.
The MKV container is not yet supported but there are other devices which do, however some people don’t want to sacrifice the player aesthetics and price in order to get an extra format. An good feature anime lovers will find useful is the picture display capabilities which can be used to read mangas, all others will find the space and compatibility features just perfect.

God, Allah, and Zen
Why does it matter the name that we give the Creator of ther universe? The difficult but unvarnished answer is because every religion thinks that ALL other religions are heretical and false. And since each religion has it’s own name for this Creator, to even verbalize the name of another religion’s God is tantamount to anathema. In other words, you will be run out of your church, denomination, or religion on a fast rail.
Why are so sensitive, biased, prejudiced, judgmental, and intolerant? That’s a lot of adjectives!
One of the most well know religious historians is Huston Smith. Huston Cummings Smith was born in 1919 and is among the preeminent religious scholars in the United States. His work, The Religions of Man (later revised and retitled The World’s Religions, is a classic with over two million copies sold, and remains a common introduction to comparative religion. Not too shabby, eh?
Well, Huston is recognized as a life-long Christian!
What’s not so well known though is that he prays to Allah five times a day. Say what? How can that be? Is he skitzo, confused, or just a compromiser? How about none of those? Let’s add to the mix that he also practices yoga. So what else you might ask?
How about his Zen meditations? Zen is much easier to swallow when one really understands that Zen does not recognize or worship any God. Zen is a school of Mah?y?na Buddhism notable for its emphasis on mindful acceptance of the present moment, spontaneous action, and letting go of self-conscious, judgmental thinking. Now that’s something worth practicing.
C.S. Lewis, one of the most well-known Christians realized that much of Christian thought came out of the Axial Age and previous philosophical concepts wherein he wrote, “I can’t say for certain which bits came into Christianity from other religions. An enormous amount did.” The stench of exclusivism is a foul ordor indeed.
So, maybe Christians should ligthen up a bit and love everyone since God did create everyone and Genesis 9 indicates that God, Allah, or Creator of the universe is not too happy with how we have been treating one another (can you say Crusades and Inquisitions?). Regardless of the name or the rituals, there’s just ONE GOD!

How to Transform the Laws of Attraction Into a “zen Voyage"
If you are like me, you are probably wondering what this “Law of Attraction” is all about”…
Last year, I traveled to India to study and sing with a group of singers and chanting masters. As soon as we started chanting, I felt a sudden shift happen within me. It was amazing! I felt such freedom and inner peace. I had discovered music mantras; (old sacred teaching/texts or meditations from the Veda which help calm your mind) and it finally helped me shut the chatter box in my mind….
So how does this relate to the Law of Attraction? As shown in the Secret, the Law of Attraction will help you create your ideal future by repeating your wishes and visualizing your futur in the present moment. By focusing on them daily, the universe will then bring to you the opportunities to act upon and make your wishes a reality…
Now you don’t need to go to India, or be a singer either. You can create your own sacred place right where you are, right now… Just close your eyes and repeat the following mantra in your mind (say it aloud if you can , if not, repeat it in your mind)
OM NAMA SHIVAYA
This is a meditation mantra and it is repeated to attain spiritual growth. Repeat this mantra all day long and see what happens, but do it consistently.
My India experience was so amazing and transformative that when I got back, I decided to record the mantras so I can re-live this inner peace feeling daily.
That’s when I decided to record ZEN Voyage, a music CD that will calm your mind and soothe your soul. I hope I can help others soothe themselves through my voice and music. Namaste
